Boutique Hotels of the Catskills and Hudson Valley

Camptown Catskills
Troutbeck — Amenia, NY, USA

Far from a comprehensive list, but certainly a good way to get yourself started, here’s a sweet 16 of some of our favorite boutique hotels in the Catskills and Hudson Valley.

You know a destination has arrived — or in this case, a region, or more accurately, two regions — when the hotel offerings converge. When a place is somewhat popular, it might have a few downmarket accommodation options: your national chains and assorted family motels. And it might have a few upscale spots: historic inns, fancy retreats (wellness, corporate, or otherwise). When those two ends meet, via a full filling out of the middle, that’s when you’ve made it.

The Catskills and Hudson Valley have certainly made it, and can confidently cover the lodging desires of all kinds of travelers. These days, your hotel options consist of everything from glamping sites and refreshed motor lodges, to renovated mansions, estates, and mid-century resorts, to the very leading edge of modern, purpose-built, rural-minded luxury. All of those configurations and more can be found in the list below and throughout our entire selection of the best places to stay in the regions.

Wylder Hotel Windham

Windham, NY, USA

Wylder Hotel Windham

No reconditioned motel or spruced-up summer camp can deliver an experience as fully realized as what’s on offer at Wylder Windham. This stately clapboard inn has stood on this site since 1880, and accumulated a handful of outbuildings along the way; today, after a thorough 21st-century renovation, it’s part boutique hotel, part mountain resort, and a fine introduction to the modern Catskills lifestyle.

Six Bells Countryside Inn

Rosendale, NY, USA

Six Bells Countryside Inn

The Six Bells Countryside Inn is the work of entrepreneur Audrey Gelman, known first for a line of women-only co-working spaces and later for the Six Bells home goods shop in Brookyln’s Cobble Hill. There’s a whole fictional backstory and cast of characters involved in the Inn’s creation, but for guests, what matters most is that its eleven rooms (and its inviting public spaces) are as quietly luxurious as they are filled with visual interest.

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge

Hunter, NY, USA

Scribner's Catskill Lodge

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge, which dates from 1966, was originally the passion project of an artist owner intent on creating a playful getaway. After extensive restorations, Scribner’s still has some of that retro charm. But the aesthetic and amenities are distinctly 21st-century: the Lodge’s 38 guest rooms, with built-in furniture and high vaulted wood ceilings painted bright white, feel more like urban lofts than cabins.

Wildflower Farms, Auberge Collection

Gardiner, NY, USA

Wildflower Farms, Auberge Collection

Auberge’s Wildflower Farms finds itself in Gardiner, on a working farm that’s more properly secluded than many Hudson Valley resorts. Alongside its 65 luxurious and surprisingly stylish cabins are the expansive Thistle Spa, and outdoor spaces encompass the whole of this working farm — whose produce, not incidentally, provides some of the ingredients for Clay, a restaurant singularly focused on Hudson Valley flavors.

Troutbeck

Amenia, NY, USA

Troutbeck

Troutbeck has been a creative retreat for well over a century, having welcomed Twain, Emerson, Thoreau, and many others along the way. The estate has seen some changes over the years — Benton Cottage dates back to 1760, while the 17th-century Manor House was rebuilt in 1919 — but it’s perhaps most remarkable for its continuity. A recent renovation has preserved the historical character while bringing the experience entirely up to date.

Camptown Catskills

Leeds, NY, USA

Camptown Catskills

Not every modern-day Catskills escape begins with raw material as promising as the 1930s motel that now serves as Camptown’s main lodge. The nearly century-old bones of the place have been preserved, but refinished in a style that’s not excessively true to any one era — there’s a bit of modernism, some Shaker simplicity, and plenty of rustic rough edge. The 26 additional cabins are each different but all are variations on the central theme.

Seminary Hill Orchard & Cidery

Callicoon, NY, USA

Seminary Hill Orchard & Cidery

Seminary Hill Orchard & Cidery has drawn attention for its modern cidery structure, which takes the traditional barn-style silhouette in a modern and extremely sustainable direction. Just down the road, however, in a pair of houses renovated by local hospitality experts Homestedt, is what brings us to Seminary Hill: the Boarding House, a 17-room boutique hotel in a Shaker-inspired contemporary-classic style.

Pocketbook Hotel & Baths

Hudson, NY, USA

Pocketbook Hotel & Baths

First a textile mill, later a pocketbook factory, this red brick industrial structure has stood since the 1890s on a generous parcel of land just off Hudson, New York’s main drag. But it’s only after a 2025 re-imagining at the hands of Charlap Hyman & Herrero that it became what it is today: Pocketbook Hotel & Baths, a proper luxury boutique hotel on a scale that sets it apart from the region’s farmhouse inns and modernized motor lodges.

INNESS

Accord, NY, USA

INNESS

Chic hotels in the Hudson Valley are no longer an occasional novelty; the 40-room Inness is an example of a thoughtful approach, the work of Taavo Somer, an architect and restaurateur with experience in boutique hospitality. The farmhouse contains 12 soothing, minimalist-luxe rooms, which are joined by a further 28 cabins in a similar utilitarian-chic style.

The Maker Hotel

Hudson, NY, USA

The Maker Hotel

The founders of the natural skincare brand Fresh were trailblazers in the “clean beauty” business. Their latest venture, a bohemian-chic boutique hotel in downtown Hudson, is a few hours away from their flagship shop in New York City, but the two have plenty in common: period charm, attention to detail, and, of course, first-rate bath products — the Maker features its own gender-inclusive fragrance.

Rivertown Lodge

Hudson, NY, USA

Rivertown Lodge

Rivertown Lodge is a 1920s cinema — later a mid-century motor inn — that’s been transformed by its independent owners and the Brooklyn design firm Workstead into one of Hudson’s most stylish lodgings. The look is both modern and historic, incorporating Shaker influences alongside contemporary colors, and drawing on the work of craftspeople and manufacturers from Hudson and greater New York State.

The Herwood Inn

Woodstock, NY, USA

The Herwood Inn

This four-suite Woodstock inn pays homage to Aretha Franklin, Carole King, Joni Mitchell, and Stevie Nicks, each room named for one of these musicians. The commitment to sustainability is genuine: fair-trade goods, eco-conscious products, Casper mattresses, and Brooklinen linens throughout. Rooms vary in layout but share thoughtful touches like clawfoot tubs, wood-paneled bathrooms, and private patios.

Hutton Brickyards

Kingston, NY, USA

Hutton Brickyards

Hutton Brickyards, in Kingston, 90 miles up the river from Manhattan, is a decommissioned industrial site finding new life as a stylish and luxurious retreat, a combination of a modern boutique hotel and a multi-purpose event venue. The old kiln sheds and crane still stand proudly on the 73-acre site, joined now by modern cabins and low-slung, brick-based buildings housing the hotel’s common spaces.

Hotel Kinsley

Kingston, NY, USA

Hotel Kinsley

A mere 95 miles up the Hudson River from Manhattan is Kingston, New York, one of a few formerly neglected riverside towns that’s undergoing something of a renaissance — and for a modern-day escape that’s rooted in Kingston’s history it would be difficult indeed to do better than the Hotel Kinsley. Its 42 rooms are spread across four restored historic buildings, including a stately old bank and a pre-Revolutionary War cottage.

The Leeway

Mt. Tremper, NY, USA

The Leeway

Opened as a motel in the 1950s, this creekside property got a kitschy makeover in 2004 by Kate Pierson, frontwoman of the B-52s. After extensive renovations at the hands of its new owners, The Leeway was reborn as a boutique inn with rustic-chic interiors, locally roasted coffee, sustainable landscaping, Apotheke bath products, and countless other details carefully chosen to help Brooklynites feel right at home.

AutoCamp Catskills

Saugerties, NY, USA

AutoCamp Catskills

AutoCamp are purveyors of luxe Airstream trailers and stylish freestanding cabins, set in adventure-ready locations beloved by experience-hungry young travelers. AutoCamp Catskills, just outside of Saugerties, brings the luxury-boutique camping experience to upstate New York; accommodations include the aforementioned trailers and cabins as well as upscale “X Suites” and summertime-only canvas tents.
