The thing about forts and watchtowers is that they typically stand guard on some pretty choice locations. That doesn\u2019t change when they\u2019re converted into hotels.<\/h4>\n

They make hotels out of anything these days. You can spend the night in a decommissioned oil rig if you want. Heck, you can probably spend a night in the helicopter that flew you there. We\u2019ve got some seriously quirky hotels in our selection, but that\u2019s not all that recommends them. The eccentricity needs to be supported by impressive service and style as well. You wouldn\u2019t want to sleep in just any oil rig, right? No, only the best oil rigs for you!<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t actually have any oil rig hotels on Tablet. Nor helicopters, for that matter. But we do have something equally cool, and a little more locked to the land. <\/p>\n

Decommissioned forts and watchtowers make for a surprisingly delightful hotel experience. For obvious reasons, they tend to be located in elevated locations that offer panoramic views, oftentimes overlooking the sea. A timeless strategy whether you\u2019re fighting off an advancing army or a creeping hangover. Given their original inhospitable purpose, it probably took a little extra work making these structures feel welcoming. If they’re on Tablet, you’ll know the hotelier put in the required effort.<\/p>\n

Since you\u2019re here, we\u2019ve also thrown in a couple of water tower and lighthouse hotels, free of charge. We\u2019re always keeping an eye out for you.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s so special about Mallorca? Spain is blessed with stunning landscapes and balmy climes almost from bottom to top. Have a look around Cap Rocat, though, a 19th-century fortress reconstructed by Spanish architect Antonio Obrador, and set on an 88-acre coastal estate overlooking the Bay of Palma, and you\u2019re quite likely to come away a believer. <\/p>\n

Frankly, they had us at \u201cthousand-year-old Umbrian hilltop watchtower converted into a seven-room boutique hotel,\u201d and that was before we ever saw inside. For while the exterior may be a thousand years old, the interiors are as modern as they come.<\/p>\n
