Not this year, to be clear. We\u2019re talking about 2013, when Marseille served as European Capital of Culture, a designation awarded annually to two European Union cities. Flooded with euros in the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/08\/travel\/marseille-polishes-its-image.html\">build-up<\/a> to the honor, Marseille built new museums and revitalized public spaces, and that\u2019s on top of what the city\u2019s always boasted: sun, beaches, and all the good things that come with the word \u201cMediterranean.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where to begin in Marseille:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/110318\/DifCalanques.jpg\" alt=\"The Calanques\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chateau d&#8217;If and The Calanques<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>IF YOU TAKE ONE BOAT:<\/strong><br \/>\nIf there are diehard <em>Count of Monte Cristo<\/em> fans, you\u2019ll find them on the ferry to <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/ee.france.fr\/en\/discover\/chateau-if\">Chateau d&#8217;If<\/a>, the prison \u2014 think Alcatraz \u2014 famous for putting away the fictional protagonist in Alexandre Dumas\u2019 celebrated 1844 novel. And though you\u2019ll get a lovely view of the Vieux Port on your way to prison, we recommend the slightly longer float along the calanques. Stretching the coast between Marseille and Cassis, the calanques are Mediterranean beauty personified, a series of inlets amidst the imposing limestone cliffs jutting into the sea. Follow the coastline and you&#8217;ll come to Calanques National Park which, in 2012, became France\u2019s first <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/story\/20110707-frances-newest-national-park\">new<\/a> national park since 1979.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/110318\/PastisRicard.jpg\" alt=\"PastisRicard\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastis Ricard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>IF YOU HAVE ONE DRINK:<\/strong><br \/>\nA strong aperitif called pastis has about the same status in Marseille as bouillabaisse. Both are city staples, both have deep roots here, and both are a must for visitors looking to get a sense of the place by putting things in their mouths. The yellow, anise-flavored booze, usually served alongside a tall jug of water for mixing, became popular in the early 20th century after a <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-13159863\">ban<\/a> on its cousin, absinthe. Drink it slowly, drink it with a view of the sea, drink it knowing that it\u2019s about 40 percent alcohol. Look for the classic brand, Pernod Ricard, in a bottle boasting \u201cpastis de Marseille.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/110318\/VieuxPort.jpg\" alt=\"Vieux Port\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vieux Port (Image courtesy of Foster and Partners)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>IF YOU SEE ONE PORT BY LAND:<\/strong><br \/>\nTake a boat and you\u2019ll likely see Vieux Port by sea, but it\u2019s worth a look around by foot, too. A <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/10\/04\/t-magazine\/marseille-the-secret-capital-of-france.html\n\">beneficiary<\/a> of recent renovations, the port received a massive <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/09\/08\/travel\/marseille-polishes-its-image.html\">mirror ceiling<\/a> that\u2019s reminiscent of Chicago\u2019s Cloudgate sculpture and just as reflective of the city. And we mean that literally, not as a metaphor for Marseille\u2019s shiny new development. In fact, Vieux Port means \u201cold port,\u201d and it\u2019s the old that retains a large appeal in the area \u2014 think centuries-old <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marseilletourisme.fr\/les-monuments\/fort-saint-nicolas\/\n\">Fort Saint Nicolas<\/a> and <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marvellous-provence.com\/marseille\/what-to-see\/museums-galleries\/mucem-and-fort-saint-jean\">Fort Saint Jean<\/a>, in addition to the ancient church, <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marseille13.fr\/fr\/eglise-saint-ferreol-les-augustins\">Saint-Ferr\u00e9ol les Augustins<\/a>. Then there\u2019s the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/theculturetrip.com\/europe\/france\/articles\/10-of-marseilles-best-markets\/\">fish market<\/a>, a longstanding institution itself. If you want to see what your bouillabaisse looks like before it\u2019s stewed, that\u2019s as good a reason as any to wake up before 9 am, when the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marvellous-provence.com\/marseille\/what-to-see\/markets\">fishermen<\/a> begin to display and sell their morning catch. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/110318\/Mucem.jpg\" alt=\"Mucem\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mucem (Image courtesy of BRENAC CC BY-SA 3.0)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>IF YOU VISIT ONE MUSEUM:<\/strong><br \/>\nInaugurated during \u2014 what else \u2014 that magical 2013 capital designation, the stunning <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mucem.org\/en\/the-mucem\">Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations<\/a> (MuCEM) counts the 12th century Fort Saint Jean as one of its attractions. Check it out before taking a bridge to the so-called J4 building, where you\u2019ll find exhibits spanning the breadth of all Mediterranean societies, from the historical to the contemporary. But aside from that ambitious mission, the two buildings offer lovely courtyards and gardens. You have options.
