And we&#8217;re certainly not too proud to admit that many of the coolest and most comforting features found in hotels are inspired by elements originally executed in the world&#8217;s great houses.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, we&#8217;ve decided to pay tribute to the forms that inform so much of what we do. We&#8217;ve selected sixteen residences that were designed by some of the most influential Modernist architects of the 20th century. Set in an orange grove, the circular home features sweeping views of the Camelback Mountains, a central courtyard, Wright\u2019s bright and cheerful &#8220;March Balloons&#8221; carpet, and a cantilevered spiral walk-up design \u2014 an early example of the iconic architect&#8217;s later style.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">RICHARD NEUTRA<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Hassrick Residence \u2014 Philadelphia, PA<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwell.com\/article\/the-stunningly-restored-hassrick-residence-by-richard-neutra-hits-the-market-at-dollar2.2m-b4afabcc\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/102018-dwell\/RichardNeutra.jpg\" alt=\"The Hassrick Residence\" width=\"960\" height=\"auto\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the few homes on the East Coast designed by Richard Neutra, the Hassrick Residence was originally built in 1958 in the International Style. It presents a modest facade, while the interior embraces the outdoors through a 40-foot sliding glass wall. Other Neutra signatures include the tongue-and-groove ceilings, open kitchen, and commanding fireplace.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">EERO SAARINEN<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Miller House \u2014 Columbus, IN<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwell.com\/home\/miller-house-8a2cde69\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/102018-dwell\/EeroSaarinen.jpg\" alt=\"The Miller House\" width=\"960\" height=\"auto\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In 1952, the industrialist J. Irwin Miller and his wife, Xenia, commissioned this remarkable house in Columbus, Indiana. Eero Saarinen designed the building, and Alexander Girard masterminded the interiors, which include what is perhaps the world&#8217;s most famous sunken living room\/conversation pit.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">PHILIP JOHNSON<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Wiley House \u2014 New Canaan, CT<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwell.com\/article\/after-a-year-on-the-market-philip-johnsons-wiley-house-drops-by-dollar2-million-08667268\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/102018-dwell\/PhilipJohnson.jpg\" alt=\"The Wiley House\" width=\"960\" height=\"auto\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Johnson built the Wiley House at a time when the midcentury movement was booming, especially in New Canaan. In the early 1960s, Wexler teamed up with Richard Harrison to launch their first residential subdivision in the city, the El Rancho Vista Estates. Within a sprawling city that has suffered near-disastrous decline, this racially and economically diverse enclave just northeast of downtown has not only aged gracefully but today flourishes with new life.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">CRAIG ELLWOOD<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Smith House \u2014 Los Angeles, CA<\/em><\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dwell.com\/article\/craig-ellwood-smith-house-los-angeles-real-estate-59bfcc7a\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/102018-dwell\/CraigEllwood.jpg\" alt=\"The Smith House\" width=\"960\" height=\"auto\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Originally constructed in 1958 by influential modernist architect Craig Ellwood, the Smith House was restored in 2018 under the guidance of James Tyler, FAIA. In 1938, when Walter Gropius built the Hagerty House along the rocky coastline of Cohasset, Massachusetts, the stodgy Yankee neighbors were appalled. The minimalist International Style structure sat in sharp contrast to the area\u2019s traditional shingle, Federalist, and Greek Revival architecture.
