But things are not always what they seem. With help from Atlas Obscura, we&#8217;re exposing a lesser-known side of the city \u2014 and its residents.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Midwesterners are generally a courteous bunch, I won\u2019t dispute that. It isn&#8217;t always politeness and propriety, though \u2014 not in Chicago, at least. Chicagoans are absolutely vicious if a suburbanite like myself implies that they&#8217;re from the city proper. As anyone from Chicago itself will tell you \u2014 aggressively \u2014 you can\u2019t say you\u2019re from Chicago unless you&#8217;re actually <em>from<\/em> Chicago. I\u2019ve been scoffed at, ridiculed, and in one case actually had liquid thrown in my face for making the claim (it&#8217;s a long story), and I\u2019m just from 30 minutes outside city limits.<\/p>\n<p>Why so serious? Maybe residents are especially territorial because Chicago is the only massive city in a relatively rural region. Maybe that leads to people from farther away than usual claiming it as their home. Or maybe it&#8217;s just <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/lifestyles\/books\/ct-prj-chicago-the-second-city-20160503-story.html\">insecurity<\/a>. Whatever the reason, Chicagoans, at least I&#8217;m not from St. Louis, right?<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/Chicago.jpg\" alt=\"Chicago\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">There&#8217;s a second side to the Second City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lucky for me, our partnership with Atlas Obscura \u2014 cataloger of all things bizarre and overlooked \u2014 makes it easy to learn city secrets that might surprise even the most die-hard, screaming Cubs fan. These aren\u2019t the standard landmarks you&#8217;d find in a tourism brochure. These attractions reveal another side of the city. Bring them up, and you might actually pass for an honest-to-God native.<\/p>\n<p>Not that I\u2019d recommend trying, unless you\u2019re wearing a poncho.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">THE BIZARRE MUSEUMS<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The Obama Library will have weirdo neighbors<\/em><\/h4>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/Surgical-Postcards.jpg\" alt=\"Surgical museum and Postcard collection\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: Skull from the International Museum of Surgical Science (Image courtesy of Michelle Enemark &#8211; Creative Commons Attribution). Did you know an obstetrician uses special <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/imss.org\/2018\/06\/15\/a-note-from-the-collection-a-recollection\/\">forceps<\/a> if the placenta doesn&#8217;t come out naturally? Did you want to know that? Those are the kind of facts that await you at the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/international-museum-surgical-science\">International Museum of Surgical Science<\/a>, an ode to the history (and the hardware) of medical slicing and dicing. For a certain type of person, the giant plush organs at the gift shop alone might be worth the trip.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is IMSS the only niche assemblage in Chicago. The <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/newberry-library-postcard-collection\">Newberry Library Postcard Collection<\/a>, for instance, holds an outrageous selection \u2014 in the millions \u2014 of old postcards, open by appointment only, and the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/leather-archives-museum-2\">Leather Archives &amp; Museum<\/a> takes a serious look at the understudied subcultures of leather, kink, and fetish. At the latter, an old boiler room hosts the \u201cDungeon Exhibit,\u201d featuring things like a male chastity device and a spanking bench. For display only.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/WoollyMammoth.jpg\" alt=\"Woolly Mammoth\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Various oddities in Woolly Mammoth (Images courtesy of Woolly Mammoth)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the most arresting collection, fetish handcuffs aside, is not a museum but a shop, called <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/woolly-mammoth-antiques-and-oddities-2\">Woolly Mammoth Antiques and Oddities<\/a>. Depending on what impresses you, it\u2019s a seriously impressive combination of medical peculiarities and bizarre works of taxidermy not completely dissimilar from the museum we showed you <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/magazine.tablethotels.com\/en\/2018\/07\/stop-wining\/\">in Tuscany<\/a>. Of particular note? The animal fetuses in jars, the alligator that\u2019s been turned into a lamp, and the many, many bones.<\/p>\n<p>Truly something for everyone in Chicago.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">THE UNCANNY SCULPTURES<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Not found in the Art Institute<\/em><\/h4>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/Fountain.jpg\" alt=\"Shit Fountain\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shit fountain (Image courtesy of Jake Trussell on Flickr &#8211; Creative Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chicago boasts a massive, <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Picasso\">droopy-faced Picasso<\/a> and a glorious, shiny bean. And somehow, those statues look incredibly normal next to the \u2014 pardon our Midwest French \u2014 <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/shit-fountain\">Shit Fountain<\/a>. We don\u2019t say that to be crude. It\u2019s not as messy as it sounds, just a stationary rock of dump standing as a passive aggressive reminder to pick up after your dog. Created by miffed Chicago artist Jerzy S. Kenar, locals who come across it generally laugh and take a selfie. The most creative passersby climb atop it for a particularly <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BbuZwQ8j5EX\/?hl=en&amp;tagged=shitfountain\">fecal pose<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/Lucent-Oz.jpg\" alt=\"Pinocchio\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: Lucent (Image courtesy of Mark Hadden &#8211; with permission). Right: Tin Man, Wizard of Oz Park (Image courtesy of Brimurray047 &#8211; Atlas Obscura User)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For the slightly more refined artistic palette, there\u2019s &#8220;<a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/lucent\">Lucent<\/a>,\u201d a dazzling orb in the lobby of the John Hancock Building that draws favorable comparisons to the aforementioned Bean. Its 3,115 lights represent all the stars visible to the naked eye in the Northern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>But lest you think Chicago is all the highs of stars and the lows of feces, there&#8217;s plenty of weird stuff in the middle. The statue of <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/the-grand-old-man-of-dentistry\">G.V. Black<\/a> commemorates a towering figure in the dental profession, the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/man-with-fish\">Man with Fish<\/a> looks exactly as it sounds outside the famous Shedd aquarium, and an impressive number of Wizard of Oz sculptures adorn the instructively named <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/oz-park\">Oz Park<\/a>. Why? Because the book&#8217;s author used to live in the neighborhood. And also, why not? Chicago is strange.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">THE DEATHLY MEMORIALS<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The 20th Century was a dangerous time for leisure<\/em><\/h4>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/Tsavos.jpg\" alt=\"Michelangelo\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: Taxidermied Tsavo Man Eaters (Image courtesy of Superx308). Rex, beyond the ancient mummies, sit two dead lions among a vast array of taxidermied African animals. Known as the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/tsavo-man-eaters-lions\">Tsavo Man Eaters<\/a>, these two lions \u2014 really very docile now \u2014 terrorized hundreds (and ate dozens) of railway workers in Kenya nearly 120 years ago. They\u2019re not as big as you\u2019d think.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago\u2019s littered with morbid little histories like that. You might walk by the appropriately named <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/couch-place-the-alley-of-death\">Alley of Death<\/a> in the Loop without an inkling of the 600 people who burned to death there in 1903 theater fire. Then there\u2019s the little plaque commemorating \u201cChicago\u2019s Titanic\u201d on the river, a small reminder of the over 800 who drowned when the <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/s-s-eastland-memorial\">S.S. Eastland<\/a> capsized 20 feet from shore in 1915 before it could take its passengers on a company-funded cruise.<\/p>\n<p>Like we said, Chicago was a tough place to try to take a load off in the 20th Century.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/Battle-Gravesite.jpg\" alt=\"Parco dei Mostri\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Left: Sinking of the S.S. In \u201ca scrapyard on the banks of the Calumet River\u201d is a cemetery \u2014 if you can call it that \u2014 with a single grave. <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/grave-of-andreas-von-zirngibl\">Andreas von Zirngibl<\/a>, one-armed veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, was buried there by his family in 1855 before the land was acquired by a dock company. Thanks to the endless eccentricities of the law, the grave was preserved in perpetuity, and you\u2019re welcome to visit, even if the area\u2019s now a sparse industrial recycling plant (more details <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/grave-of-andreas-von-zirngibl\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Hotels<\/h2>\n<p>Chicago is full of cool mini-chain boutiques, stylish outposts that work for either business or leisure. And you really can&#8217;t go wrong, because no matter where you stay in Chicago you\u2019re going to come across gorgeous architecture and food that might kill you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Freehand Chicago<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Near North Side<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tablethotels.com\/en\/chicago-hotels\/freehand-chicago\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/081118\/Freehand.jpg\" alt=\"Relais Freehand Chicago - boutique hotel in Chicago\" width=\"960\" height=\"515\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Part hotel and part hostel, Freehand Chicago is a place where the rooms are only part of the equation.
