With help from our friends at Atlas Obscura, we&#8217;re shedding some light on the hidden places, mysterious marvels, and curious oddities that often go overlooked in the region.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>If you only get one vacation to Tuscany in your entire life, take a thousand wine tours. We won\u2019t dispute that. Pretty much anywhere you stay will provide you with some of the world&#8217;s best wining and dining options. But once you\u2019ve whetted your appetite, it\u2019s time to discover that there\u2019s more to the ancient region. All around you is evidence \u2014 some very well-hidden \u2014 of a history of religious obsessions, tortured artists, morbid curiosities, and outdoor wonders that are easy to take for granted alongside the staggering landscape of vineyards. <\/p>\n<p>So in partnership with our friends at <a style=\"text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/\">Atlas Obscura<\/a> \u2014 the chroniclers of all things secret and overlooked across the globe \u2014 we\u2019re bringing you a sober guide to Tuscany.<\/p>\n<p>That doesn\u2019t mean things won\u2019t get weird. <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">GREAT OUTDOORS<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Vineyards don\u2019t have a monopoly on fresh air in Tuscany<\/em><\/h4>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/Saturnia.jpg\" alt=\"Saturnia\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thermal hot springs in Saturnia (Image courtesy of itinari).<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Wine\u2019s not the only way to relax. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/saturnia-hotsprings\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">hot springs<\/a> of southern Tuscany provide natural spots for relaxation, as the cascading thermal waterfalls reach nearly 100 degrees and create something like a massive network of outdoor hot tubs. There are at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2010\/may\/01\/italy-tuscany-natural-hot-springs\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">three options in Tuscany<\/a> (and Castello di Vicarello is near them all), but for mapping purposes, try: Cascate di Mulino. That&#8217;s the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovertuscany.com\/maremma\/thermal-baths-of-saturnia.html\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">free entrance<\/a> outside the main spa in Saturnia. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re of a slightly more active mindset, you can find your way up the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/torre-guinigi-guinigi-tower\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Torre Guinigi<\/a> in Lucca to a historic hanging garden with spectacular views of the city or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/ponte-sospeso\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ponte Sospeso<\/a> in San Marcello Pistoiese, an almost comically long suspension bridge over the Lima River Valley. In Vaglia, there&#8217;s also a beautiful renaissance garden dating back to the 16th century and featuring a massive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/villa-demidoff\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Colossus<\/a> statue.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/Pinocchio.jpg\" alt=\"Pinocchio\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pinocchio Park in Collodi (Images courtesy of Dr, Alan P Newman and Jorden rundt og hjem igen on Flickr).<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the pi\u00e8ce de r\u00e9sistance (or whatever is the Italian equivalent of that phrase) is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/pinocchio-park\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pinocchio Park<\/a> in Collodi \u2014 the very town from which Carlo Lorenzini took his pseudonym before writing <em> The Adventures of Pinocchio<\/em>. A beautiful green space opened in 1956, it\u2019s full of Pinocchio-themed art and sculptures, including a ridiculous sea monster that kids can climb up for a view of the park.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re begging for more Pinocchio history after that, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/oak-of-the-witches\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Oak of the Witches<\/a> is a quick drive away, and is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.italymagazine.com\/italy\/capannori\/oak-tree-pinocchio-becomes-national-monument\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">said<\/a> to have inspired several Pinocchio adventures dreamed up by Collodi (like the time he was hanged by criminals \u2014 an episode that didn&#8217;t make it into the Disney movie). As you may have guessed, the giant, mystical-looking oak is also associated with witchcraft.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">HIDDEN ART<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>There are secrets in Tuscany\u2019s art history<\/em><\/h4>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/Michelangelo.jpg\" alt=\"Michelangelo\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Michelangelo&#8217;s drawings under the Medici Chapel and his legendary graffiti in Florence. But as at least one theory goes, Michelangelo, while in hiding from the powerful Medici family, filled a secret chamber under the Medici Chapels with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/michelangelos-hidden-drawings\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">sketches and drawings<\/a>. While the work can\u2019t be verified as Michelangelo\u2019s, there\u2019s enough of his style there that experts felt certain of what they were seeing when the room was discovered via trapdoor by an intrepid museum director in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cntraveler.com\/story\/florences-secret-michelangelo-room-will-open-to-the-public-in-2020\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1975<\/a>. Officially open only to researchers in 2018, the room will open to the public by 2020 (and Atlas Obscura says exceptions are sometimes made, if you ask around). So if you\u2019re the planning type, start planning. Otherwise, more immediately accessible is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/l-importuno-di-michelangelo\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">L\u2019importuno di Michelangelo<\/a> (Michelangelo\u2019s graffiti), which can be found on a wall near the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. <\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/Mostri.jpg\" alt=\"Parco dei Mostri\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8220;Mouth of Hell&#8221; sculpture at the Parco dei Mostri (Image courtesy of Pavlo Boyko\/Creative Commons).<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, if you&#8217;re willing to entertain the thought of art by someone other than Michelangelo, we have to recommend you stay in a 14th-century villa called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/residenza-d-arte\"style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Residenza d&#8217;Arte<\/a> (more on this below), or visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/the-monsters-of-bomarzo\"style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Parco dei Mostri<\/a> just outside of Tuscany, in Lazio. A sculpture garden unlike anything you\u2019ve ever seen \u2014 and certainly the polar opposite of the traditional Italian Renaissance garden \u2014 it\u2019s full of monsters. And it only takes a couple of sightings to see why this place <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/travel\/story\/20170807-italys-mysterious-medieval-garden-of-monsters\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">appealed<\/a> so much to Salvador Dali. (The garden was largely ignored until the Spanish artist\u2019s short film about the place in 1948.) <\/p>\n<p>Must see: the picnic table inside the massive, screaming \u201cmouth of hell\u201d sculpture.<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">MORBID CURIOSITIES<\/h2>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Art wasn\u2019t the Medici family&#8217;s only interest<\/em><\/h4>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/Specola.jpg\" alt=\"Specola\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhibits from La Specola in Florence (Images courtesy of Corinnealexandra and Daderot\/cc by-sa 3.0).<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Around the very time that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/art\/what-to-see\/madame-tussaud-and-the-weird-world-of-wax-women\/\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Marie Tussaud<\/a> arrived in England with her wax statues, the powerful Medici family\u2019s collection of oddities was opened to the public at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/la-specola\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">La Specola<\/a> in Florence. It\u2019s now among the oldest museums in Europe. But instead of nearly-real (or sometimes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/beyonce-wax-figure\/\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">less so<\/a>) statues of Beyonc\u00e9, the style of the day \u2014 still displayed there now, among other anatomical peculiarities \u2014 was wax models of naked women in \u201csemi-erotic poses, but with their rib cages and stomachs open to the world.\u201d Created by Italian sculptor Clemente Susini in the 18th century, it&#8217;s a style that the Marquis de Sade is said to have loved. <\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/Torture.jpg\" alt=\"Torture Museum and St. Catherine of Siena's severed head\" width=\"960\" height=\"773\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Torture Museum and St. Catherine of Siena&#8217;s severed head (Right image courtesy of Giovanni Cerretani).<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve seen all you can stomach of the strange, ancient erotica of Florence, head over to San Gimignano in Siena and you can find the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/the-museum-of-medieval-torture\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Museum of Medieval Torture<\/a>, an all-too-apropos collaboration with the nearby Museum of the Death Penalty. If the phrases \u201cinquisitorial chair\u201d or \u201cheretic&#8217;s fork\u201d intrigue you, maybe keep that to yourself. But also go see them. Other attractions for the morbid? A saint\u2019s somewhat well-preserved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/st-dominics-basilica\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">severed head<\/a> in Siena, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/incorruptible-st-zita\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">naturally mummified<\/a> peasant girl in Lucca, and the creepily-named but surprisingly hopeful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/ospedale-degli-innocenti-hospice-innocent\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Hospital of the Innocents<\/a> back in Florence. <\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">The Hotels<\/h2>\n<p>When you think Tuscany, you think big, stone villas, extravagant castles on hilltops surrounded by vineyards and farms. Our favorite Tuscan lodgings certainly follow that old blueprint, but they bring a distinct twist to the format with bold concepts, designs, and particularly mind-blowing amenities. Although we do admit \u2014 you can get as weird as you want in Tuscany, but the traditional vineyard experience is never out of reach.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Relais Residenza D&#8217;Arte<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Siena<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tablethotels.com\/en\/siena-hotels\/relais-residenza-darte\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/RelaisArte.jpg\" alt=\"Relais Residenza D'Arte - boutique hotel in Siena\" width=\"960\" height=\"515\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The brainchild of Italian sculptor, painter, and interior designer Anna Izzo, forget trips to the Duomo and St. Peter&#8217;s, the Relais Residenza d\u2019Arte is a destination in itself. Brimming with art inside and out, whether you\u2019re in the guest rooms or the sculpture garden, staying here is something like spending the night at the world\u2019s coziest modern art museum. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\t<a id=\"thb-button-69ec4bf6407ec\" class=\"button medium   black\" href=\"\" target=\"_self\" role=\"button\" title=\"\"><\/a>\n\t\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"height:1px;border-top:3px double #ccc;margin-top:30px;margin-bottom:60px;display:block;clear:both\"><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Castello di Vicarello<\/h2>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Cinigiano<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tablethotels.com\/en\/cinigiano-hotels\/castello-di-vicarello\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn1.tablethotels.com\/media\/ecs\/global\/magazine\/story-images\/070718\/CastelloVicarello.jpg\" alt=\"Castello di Vicarello - boutique hotel in Cinigiano\" width=\"960\" height=\"515\" border=\"0\" data-gae=\"Magazine, Clicked, Image\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>An authentic 12th-century castle turned charming country boutique, we might define Castello di Vicarello by its picturesque location, set on a hilltop away from the crowds (and, as we noted, in driving distance of three natural hot springs).
