On this day when everyone else on the internet is spinning crazy yarns or announcing absurd fictional products, we thought we’d let you in on a little (true) Tablet secret: it’s not actually all that hard to find a great hotel in a cultured, cosmopolitan capital, or an emerging, hipster-approved resort destination. What’s much more challenging is finding something stylish, something tasteful, in a place where both style and taste are in short supply. You expect we’ll have you covered in London, in Paris, in Tulum and Trancoso — but in Cancún?
Cancún, Mexico — For years we went around saying we’d never put a hotel from overbuilt, overdeveloped Cancún on Tablet. And then the Nizuc Resort & Spa went and made liars out of us. It’s located on a picturesque and relatively secluded bit of coastline, and it’s tastefully luxurious in a way that the rest of Cancún’s resorts are most decidedly not. Next time your friends try to drag you to some drab mega-resort, tell them you’ve got a better idea.

Doha, Qatar — Qatar is the world’s richest country — albeit by certain slightly questionable measures — and frankly it’s a living reminder that there are things money can’t buy. But if you ever find yourself in Doha, you could do vastly worse than the W. Las Vegas, Nevada — In the teeming petri dish of hospitality that is Vegas, you can find something for just about every taste, simply as a result of blind evolution. But if you’re a believer in the intelligent design of the Mandarin Oriental hotel group, there’s no need to spend time studying the local wildlife. Simply check in at the Mandarin, whose impeccably well-composed product feels downright restrained, almost sober, in the context of Sin City.

Cannes, France — For all the reflected movie-star glamour of the film festival, today’s Cannes is, at its essence, one great big convention center. We find ourselves longing for the Cannes of a century ago, in its Jazz Age incarnation — which is perfectly exemplified in the present day by the gloriously decadent Art Deco splendor of the Majestic.

Kiev, Ukraine — Given the geo-political situation, this is perhaps not one for the faint of heart. (Though, to be fair, Ukraine is a big country.) And at the best of times Kiev can be a mixed bag, stylistically speaking. But Ukraine’s first design hotel is a strong contender — created in collaboration with heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko, it is, if you’ll forgive our saying so, something of a knockout.
