Blame all those lingering television shots of the manicured grass courts and happy crowds at Wimbledon; lately we’ve had England on the brain. And where better to try out some traditional English lawn sports — or just don some tennis whites — than at one of England’s classic country manors? Here we’ve rounded up a few of our favorites.

1.

Chewton Glen Hotel
New Milton, Hampshire — Quite possibly the pinnacle of British country-house hotel splendor, the ever-well-groomed Chewton Glen sits on a hundred and thirty acres of parkland at the edge of the New Forest. The vast and tidy croquet lawn, laid out in front of the ivy-covered 18th-century mansion, is about as picture-perfect a spot for an afternoon of lawn sports as one could ever hope to find.

2.

Cowley Manor
Cheltenham, Gloucestershire — At Cowley Manor, a vast expanse of picturesque countryside surrounds what looks from the outside like a perfectly traditional English manor house. Inside, however, it’s another story, with unexpectedly bold, ultra-modern rooms designed by the youthfully irreverent London firm of De Matos Storey Ryan.

3.

Coworth Park
Ascot, Berkshire — With its own polo field, two hundred acres of parkland right outside the door, and a location near the famous racecourse at Ascot, Coworth Park is an equestrian paradise. Whether you ride Western- or English-style, the hotel’s equestrian center has you covered, and the non-riders can keep active with a game of grass-court tennis.

4.

Fawsley Hall
Daventry, Northamptonshire — With separate Victorian, Georgian and Tudor wings, all of which were contemporary at the time they were built, this country house is long on history. The place has evolved in many ways since Queen Elizabeth I checked out in 1575, but if the sheep that keep the lawns clipped are any indication, change arrives slowly here.

5.

Linthwaite House Hotel
Windermere, Cumbria — Perched on Lake Windermere, this intimate country-house hotel feels like something out of a Brontë novel — though any romantic snafus ought to be more manageable in the stylishly designed interiors, or perhaps at the cocktail bar with its head-clearing views of the lake.

6.

Pennyhill Park Hotel
Bagshot, Surrey — This ivy-covered 1920s country house may not be as ancient as some of its counterparts, but who needs history when you have a 45,000-square-foot spa at your disposal? Plus, a location that’s just a half hour’s drive past Heathrow makes this retreat from the city a good deal more convenient.
