July, 2013

Say what you will about America’s unabashed patriotism and its ever-present red, white and blue — most of us can at least agree that, in the hands of a good decorator, some stars and stripes can really make a room pop. For the 4th of July, we’ve found seven hotels — home and abroad — that do Americana right.

1.

Hotel Fauchere
Milford, Pennsylvania — From the outside, Hotel Fauchere looks like it could have been lifted straight off the canvas of American Gothic, though inside, the artwork leans more towards the Hudson River school. And the hotel’s Milford, Pennsylvania location is about as all-American as it gets. Just don’t call it “flyover country.”

2.

Hotel J
Stockholm — Inspired by the style of Newport, Rhode Island, Stockholm’s seaside Hotel J has a subtle strain of Americana running throughout, with plenty of maritime atmosphere and several constellations’ worth of bold white stars on deep blue backgrounds. Show up on the right late-summer weekend and you might even catch a crayfish boil complete with lemon pie for dessert.

3.

The Driskill
Austin, Texas — Austin’s grand old Driskill Hotel honors its cattle-baron founder with an abundance of leather, the occasional cowhide rug or mounted steer’s head, and a glass-clinking, deal-making atmosphere in the Lobby Bar. Back in 1887 the hotel hosted the inaugural ball for Texas governor Sul Ross, and ever since it’s been a parade of major Texan and American political figures, including a long procession of presidents.

4.

Pelican Hotel
Miami — Everything at the flauntingly ostentatious Pelican Hotel feels like it’s presented with a wink, not least the kitschy Americana of the flag-happy Born in the Stars and Stripes room — the work of a Swedish decorator, as it happens.

5.

Hotel Lincoln
Chicago — Hotel Lincoln is home to its own era-mashing brand of Midwestern Americana. It’s got Illinois’s most famous son in its name, a guest list that spans the range from Al Capone to David Mamet, and a smattering of unpretentious, locally made art, such as the porcelain squirrel and poodle inspired by Jeff Koons’s famous piggy bank.

6.

25hours Hotel tailored by Levi’s
Frankfurt — For whatever reason, American style usually seems to translate well to Germany, especially at this partnership between the German 25hours hotel group and the venerable San Francisco–based denim house. For those in more of a Nashville mood, there’s also the Gibson session room, a red- and blue-lit musical man-cave curated by the iconic American guitar maker, complete with reverent posters of American rock stars and an old-fashioned diner-style jukebox.

7.

Farmer’s Daughter Hotel
Los Angeles — Located across the street from the studio where The Price Is Right is filmed, the Farmer’s Daughter makes good use of the same primary color palette and somehow even manages to redeem gingham and rooster-print wallpaper. What’s more, it’s all served with a side — or more likely a piled-high plate — of gussied-up roadside diner fare at their Southern-inspired restaurant.
