July, 2013

This time of year, we can’t help feeling nostalgic for those long-ago summers at sleepaway camp — the marshmallows and campfires, canoeing on the lake, maybe some horseback riding and a round of archery. These five hotels bring us back to those summer-camp days, only this time the mystery meat has been replaced with proper gourmet fare and those grimy little shower stalls have turned into pristine spas.

1.

Carneros Inn
Napa, California — Though they look quite a lot better in the hands of the Carneros Inn’s architects, the hotel’s low-impact, metal-roofed cottages are ever-so-slightly reminiscent of those easy-to-build summer-camp bunkhouses, and the indoor-outdoor showers have a similar rustic-chic aspect. The beverage options have matured nicely, too, a glass of Napa sauvignon blanc being just the thing to round out a day of biking, hiking or horseback riding.

2.

Sundance Resort
Provo, Utah — It’s easy to reconnect with nature when your hotel feels like a natural outgrowth of the surrounding Rocky Mountain pine forest, complete with a dining room whose floor has a tree trunk growing straight through it. Opportunity for woodland adventure abounds here, and, for the arts-and-craftsy, daily art classes will have you recalling your old friendship bracelet–making talent.

3.

Manoir Hovey
North Hatley, Quebec — For those whose camp experiences consisted of lounging lakeside in tennis whites, this Canadian inn will feel like a leisurely trip down memory lane. Canoeing across Lake Massawippi is a joy, but what’s even better is collapsing into your goose down duvet at the end of the day.

4.

Echo Valley Ranch & Spa
Jesmond, British Columbia — Tucked away in the Canadian wilderness, the hardwood lodge and cabins at Echo Valley set the stage for days full of classic Western ranch activities, from panning for gold to fly fishing.

5.

Wequassett Resort and Golf Club
Harwich, Massachussetts — If you grew up spending your summers like a Kennedy on the Cape, Wequassett Resort will bring you right back to those halcyon days. A sunset sail never gets old, and for those who didn’t grow up on the water, the resort’s resident sailing experts can fill those vacant camp counselor’s shoes.
